On April 4, ESPN reported, “St. Louis signed right-handed pitcher Lin Tianwei to an international player contract. It is the first Taiwanese player to be signed by the club.”

Lin was born in Taiwan and played baseball at Chinese Culture University in Taipei. He’s a 6-foot-1 pitching prospect with a fastball. Interestingly, he is the nephew of former Dodger Guo Hongzhi.

Guo played seven seasons with the Dodgers from 2005 to 2011, going 13-17 with a 3.73 ERA in 218 games (14 starts). Following in his uncle’s footsteps, Lin Tianwei hopes to make it to the major leagues as a pitcher.

This summer, Lin participated in the MLB Draft League and pitched in four games in the College Summer League, pitching 16⅔ innings with a 3.24 ERA. Last summer, he pitched in nine games in the American Collegiate League. He’s been working his way up through the ranks.

St. Louis President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak said, “We are excited to welcome the first player from Taiwan to sign with St. Louis. We are constantly scouting every region of the world to find talented players. Chen-Hsuei-Wei Lin has the potential to be a big leaguer in the future.”

Lin Tianwei will begin training at the St. Louis Complex in Jupiter, Florida, USA. “He can throw an explosive fastball, has a physical upside and impressive athleticism,” said Matt Slater, special assistant to the general manager of the St. Louis Cardinals.

Lin represented Chinese Taipei at the Under-23 Baseball World Cup in 2021 and 2022. During the World Baseball Classic (WBC) in March, he participated in the Taiwanese WBC team’s training camp as a college invitee.
