‘Busan’ opera house construction cost 305 billion + α… Wouldn’t it be possible to have a dome stadium?

The new baseball stadium in Busan is finally becoming visible. In October 2021, Busan City announced a feasibility study for the reconstruction of the Yeonsajik Stadium and a plan to establish a basic plan, and a service study was conducted from last May. In addition, it is expected that the final service results will be announced around March after the recent procedure to listen to the opinions of the advisory group such as the Lotte club and expert civic groups.

Sajik Stadium, which was completed in October 1985 and celebrates its 38th year this year, emphasized the need for a new stadium in the baseball world due to its outdated facilities and an unfriendly environment for spectators. However, the new ballpark project was only stained with patronizing promises by politicians during the election season, and proper service was not even carried out. But this time it was different. For the first time, related services including the stadium site were carried out, and the approximate completion date was reached. The city of Busan decided to build a 21,000-seat open stadium through reconstruction on the Sajik Stadium site, and the construction is expected to begin in 2025 and be completed in 2028. 

The issue of a stadium to replace Sajik Stadium is also expected to be in the direction of renovating the Asiad Main Stadium and using it temporarily after the National Sports Festival to be held in 2025.

Among the new baseball stadium sites in Busan, the location with the best accessibility and location is the current Sajik Stadium. Undeniable. However, if you add the symbolism of the new baseball stadium, there was a site that surpassed the Sajik Stadium. It was a North Port site that had been under redevelopment since 2008. If a baseball field with the sea and the horizon, which are symbols of Busan, is built, it could be reborn as an unrivaled landmark by combining it with the image of ‘Kudo’. 

However, in the course of the redevelopment project, the North Port redevelopment project site focused on developing an international gateway and marine tourism base, such as national pledge projects such as attracting the 2030 Busan World Expo. Above all, the Opera House was chosen as a landmark building for the North Port and Busan. 

The Opera House, which started construction in May 2018 when the heated discussion about the new stadium had calmed down and drifted, now exceeds about 40%. It was scheduled to be completed in 2020, but time passed helplessly as the constructor and the designer clashed over design and construction methods over the production of the core part of the building. Eventually, the completion date was delayed until 2025.

The problem is the cost of construction. The initial construction cost of 211.5 billion won has risen to 250 billion won, and recently it has risen to 305 billion won due to inflation. In addition, as the construction completion date is delayed due to conflicts between the constructor and the designer, an additional increase in construction costs is unavoidable. It is clear that the final construction cost will be over 305 billion won.  바카라

It is a belated assumption, but it is true that if it had been a structure that would be delayed like this, it would have been better for baseball fans to have built a new baseball stadium that matches Busan instead of the opera house, and furthermore, a dome that can be used for multiple purposes and can even be turned into a theme park. 

Gocheok Dome, the only dome stadium in Korea, also cost 195.1 billion won in construction despite frequent design changes. The construction cost is much less than that of the Opera House. If proper design and construction process are followed, it can be assumed that a more splendid dome stadium than Gocheok Dome can be built for less than the cost of constructing the Opera House. 

Baseball stadiums that have recently built new stadiums also built new ones at a lower cost than the Opera House. Gwangju-KIA Champions Field (opened in 2014) cost 99.4 billion won, Daegu-Samsung Lions Park (opened in 2015) cost 166.6 billion won, and Changwon NC Park (opened in 2019) cost 127 billion won. Daejeon Baseball Dream Park, which aims to be completed in 2025, is expected to cost 157.9 billion won. All of them are significantly less than the construction cost of the opera house.

Lotte Group pledged to donate 100 billion won when the North Port redevelopment project began in 2008. This was donated to the Opera House Construction Fund in 2017. As the Lotte Group was already directly or indirectly involved in the North Port project, a new type of theme park construction centered on a dome stadium would have been possible if discussions had been active with the Busan City, Busan Port Authority, and the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, which owns the North Port site, in charge of redevelopment of the North Port. It wasn’t difficult. However, Lotte also had its own will, but was not active, and the attitude of Busan City was also in a situation where Lotte wanted a lot.

In addition, if the redevelopment project led by Lotte was carried out, the dispute over preferential treatment and the land purchase cost that exceeded the cost of building the stadium could become a reef. Nevertheless, the fact that even the minimum discussion has not been made is inevitably regrettable for baseball fans. Considering the current cost of operating an opera house, it is only natural that the size of that regret will increase.
