“For the first time since Verlander”…MLB.com also spotlights, writes Detroit team no-hitter
The Detroit Tigers threw a team no-hitter.
The Detroit Tigers defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 2-0 in game one of the 2023 Major League Baseball World Series at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan, on Monday. The Detroit pitching staff allowed four walks on the day, but did not face a single hit to earn the team no-hitter.
Three pitchers took the mound for Detroit. Starter Matt Manning pitched 6⅔ innings of scoreless baseball, striking out five and walking none; Jason Foley pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings of scoreless baseball, striking out one; and Alex Lang pitched 1 scoreless inning of scoreless baseball, striking out one. He completed the team no-hitter.
MLB.com, the official website of Major League Baseball, also highlighted Detroit’s no-hitter. “Twelve years after Justin Verlander threw a no-hitter against Toronto, Detroit’s bullpen, including Manning, tossed a no-hitter against a Toronto lineup of potent hitters,” the site said.
According to MLB.com, this is the ninth time in franchise history that Detroit has thrown a no-hitter. Not only that, but it was the first no-hitter at home since Justin Verlander threw a no-hitter against the Milwaukee Brewers in 2007.
The first inning was the biggest test. Manning got off to a shaky start when he threw a wild pitch to first baseman Bo Bissett, then walked Brendan Belt to put runners on first and second with no outs. But Manning got Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to ground out to shortstop, Matt Chapman to foul out to first base, and Cabin Vizio to strike out to end the inning.
He gave up a walk to Whit Merrifield in the second, but didn’t get a hit. Manning didn’t allow a single runner to reach base the rest of the way. In the seventh inning, Foley gave up a walk to Biggio with the bases loaded, but the Detroit pitching staff shut down the Toronto offense.
The offense got on the board early, too. With one out in the first inning, Spencer Tokelson hit an RBI double and Kerry Carpenter followed with an RBI triple to drive in two runs.카지노사이트
